Michael W. Richards has represented and counseled broadcasters, cable television providers, and other communications-related businesses. His work encompasses FCC regulation, litigation, intellectual property, and free speech issues.


Michael offers not only legal background, but almost two decades of prior experience inside the media business. Before receiving his law degree, cum laude, from Georgetown University, Michael worked as a journalist and broadcaster for several organizations including National Public Radio, ABC News, and CBS News. His broadcast credits include both a DuPont-Columbia Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award. Michael still provides occasional commentaries on First-Amendment related issues for the public radio program, “Marketplace.”


He is also the author of "Tort Vision For The New Millennium: Strengthening News Industry Standards As a Defense Tool In Lawsuits Over Newsgathering Techniques," which appeared in the Winter, 2000 issue of The Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal.


Before receiving his law degree, Michael received a B.A. in history from Clark University and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University. He is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
