Introducing New Technologies

Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth, PLC is a national leader in helping innovators bring new communications technologies to market. Proponents of creative wireless or broadband solutions often find their way blocked by FCC rules geared to older approaches. The more novel the idea, the more likely it is to encounter legal obstacles.

We are very experienced at navigating the FCC’s technical regulatory process. Our successes in the past few years include airport body-scanning devices, medical implants for treating obesity, surveillance robots, remote power, through-the-wall public safety radar, and ultra-wideband systems for communications and security. Among recent past projects are broadband over power lines, the near-universal Wi-Fi “g” standard, millimeter wave communications, radio-based meter-reading systems, software-defined and cognitive radios, satellite-based location of mobile assets, new-generation police radar detectors, and many more.

We assist manufacturers of industrial radar systems, both licensed and unlicensed, including ultra-wideband ground-penetrating radars, in-tank and outdoor level probing radars, public safety through-the-wall radars, mining radars, and security imaging equipment.

Our lawyers have been at the center of the burgeoning explosion of unlicensed radio devices. Along with well-known examples such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are thousands of applications in cordless phones, nursery monitors, wireless audio gear, automatic toll collection, wireless computer mice, automobile keyless entry systems, building security, remote meter-reading, industrial controls . . . far too many to list here. As the applications multiply, our lawyers help clients to broaden their product lines while maintaining compliance with FCC rules.

As part of the effort to implement the FCC’s National Broadband Plan, we are pioneering the provision of broadband services over television spectrum without loss of broadcast services.

We also represent users of more conventional technologies, including mobile radio and fixed microwave, who seek to keep the FCC rules abreast of technical developments in their industries.

Our work with new technologies includes detailed advice on compliance, requests for FCC interpretation of existing rules and rule waivers, proceedings to amend FCC rules, collaboration with FCC laboratory personnel on test procedures, and court action. We defend companies charged with FCC rule violations, when needed.
